I had a dream
A terrible dream
With other human rights workers
We attempted to save men
women
children
babies
From a shooting
In a mosque
But I was too late
They opened fire
dozens
prostrate in prayer
Someone gave me a prayer blanket
I hid under
Playing dead
A young woman
Next to me
Under a table
Laying casually on her back
Scrolling through her phone
Or
Texting?
Social media?
I wanted to whisper
“Play dead!”
But knew doing so
Would reveal my aliveness
I waited for them to find me
Shoot me
Or
Capture me
Plotting how to rescue
the others
I awoke
Pain traveled down from hip
To thigh
Thigh to calf
To ankle
My lover in his sleep
unknowing
my terror
Placed his arm across me
Gently holding me
The moon shone
through the window
soon a rooster would crow
And I
Here
Safe
In magical paradise
While others are murdered
As they pray
Are you the poet? Here and the two previously posted poems? Really good. I enjoyed. Glad you are having this time to express yourself. 🙏
